Level 3 Assessment for Cracking

Problem

An owner-operator identifies cracking in a vessel during on-stream inspections. The vessel is known to be susceptible to low temperature hydrogen damage (i.e., wet H2S damage).

Solution

Implement an API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 (API 579) Part9 Level 3 Fitness-For-Service (FFS)assessment. Establish maximum permissible crack sizing limits to utilize for comparison to results obtained during on stream inspection monitoring.

Value

  • Justify continued operation without repairs and prevent unplanned outages.
  • Gain an understanding of the tolerance for potential future crack-growth.
  • Establish mitigation plans to reduce risk of potential fracture with future operation (e.g., increased metal temperature, reduced pressure, etc.).
